I’m restless this evening. Bored. Not bored enough to go out though. It’s raining outside, cold and wet. Who needs it. I have the lights out and the drapes thrown wide to let in the night. I could smell the rain, feel the dampness in the air when I woke this evening. The sound of the gusting rain lashing against the windows. I was forced to slip out earlier to grab a bite to eat and that was enough of this weather for tonight. Satiated and changed into dry clothes, I find myself pacing back and forth, from room to room of my tiny little apartment.

The rash all over my face explained my doubts about yesterday night’s pizza. Despite my express wish, stated clearly and repeated often, it had contained garlic. Although my breakthrough medication all but eliminated a need for total factor sun block and blood sausage, these blemishes cruelly exposed my one-eighth-vampire roots to the world. All because of a thoughtless ingredient.

Please hold still, Madrina. Your lips haven’t dried yet.”

The woman fidgeted on the long steel table, her fingers twitching and flexing with the urge to reach up and touch her new face. Robin stood above the Madrina Dominique with needle and thread. Just one more tuck under the eyes. The pliant rubber Robin was using to sculpt the Madrina’s new cheekbones with was falling slightly just under the eyebrow. If the Madrina wasn’t careful—if she laughed and sang and did all those things that vampires do when gathered together for a party—she’d have humongous bags before the night was out.

The man, statement concluded, raised the chipped china cup to his lips. He wore a gray sharkskin suit with matching shirt and tie. His deeply tanned skin, like his almond hair, looked almost black in the dim lobby of the hotel.

Frank had just concluded his presentation regarding scientific support for vampires. Only a couple dozen interested souls attended the lecture, but those numbers were twice his last count. He was gaining a following.
